This 10-step guide will help you all you need to know to apply for Canada PR under the globally renowned Express Entry system.
How does the Express Entry work?
Launched back in 2015, Express Entry is one of the key economic immigration intake programs and the most sought-after Canadian permanent residence pathway – by aspiring immigrants from across the globe. Express Entry currently manages three Federal High Skilled (FHS) streams: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
Meeting the eligibility for Canada PR under the Express Entry would require you to have a qualifying score in the Express Entry points assessment grid. Points are based on factors such as Age, Education, Work Experience, Language Proficiency, Adaptability, Provincial Nomination, and Spousal Sponsorship.
Candidates with the highest scores are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residency in a subsequent Express Entry draw.
An ideal Express Entry candidate would meet the following requirements:
Be under 30 years of age.
Hold at least two bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
Be able to demonstrate sufficient language skills in either English or French.
Have at least 1-2 years of full-time skilled work experience in an in-demand occupation in Canada.
How to apply for Canada PR under Express Entry?
STEP 1: Find your NOC
To meet the eligibility for Canada PR, you would first need to check that your work experience is eligible for Express Entry. Your employment experience must be defined by the National Occupation Classification (NOC) system. In demand jobs in Canada are classified on the NOC list as NOC 0, A, or B.
STEP 2: Get your ECA done
To prove that your education credentials are equal or above to that of the Canadian standards, you would be required to get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) done. Some of the popular ECA regulatory bodies include Comparative Education Service (CES), International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS), and World Education Services (WES).
STEP 3: Take your language test
In order to determine your minimum language proficiency, you would be required to take a language test in either English or French. You will be evaluated across four key domains i.e., Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
STEP 4: Check your Canada PR eligibility
Generally, to apply under any of the Express Entry streams, you would be required to meet the following eligibility criteria:
Have at least 1 year of full-time continuous work experience in an in-demand job in Canada. This experience should be documented in the last 10 years.
Be able to showcase the necessary language skills required to meet the Canada PR eligibility. You would be required to achieve a minimum Canadian Benchmark Level (CLB) of 7 in either English or French.
Have academic credentials that are equivalent to that of Canadian standards. You would be required to get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report for this.
STEP 5: Calculate your CRS score
Once you meet the Canada PR eligibility, you will be placed in the Express Entry pool – alongside other qualifying candidates. Here, your profile will be based on certain factors that will evaluate and rank your profile using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The higher your CRS score in the Express Entry pool, the more are your chances of receiving an ITA to apply for Canada PR.
STEP 6: Create an Express Entry profile
Visit the official immigration website of Canada and fill out the Express Entry application. Submit your credentials and pay the application processing fees. Make sure all your credentials are accurate and complete.
STEP 7: Receive an ITA
Once submitted, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will assess your profile and determine your Canada PR eligibility. If you’ve enough CRS score, you will be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to apply for Canada PR in an Express Entry draw.
STEP 8: Gather documents for Canada PR
Once you receive your ITA, you will now need to create and submit a Canada PR application. At this step, you would be required to submit the mandated supporting documents to meet the final Canada PR eligibility. Some of the key ones include:
